The word "periodontics" relates to the dental specialty that pertains to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease that affects the jaw and gums. The gum tissues encompass and support the teeth, and the underlying jawbone anchors teeth securely in place. Periodontists have finished several years of additional dental training and are involved with maintaining the jawbone and tissues' function, health, and aesthetics.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a gradual condition that starts with mild gum inflammation named gingivitis. It is the foremost cause of tooth loss in adults residing in the developed world and should be seriously considered. Periodontal disease (frequently called gum disease) symptoms can include red, swollen, painful, or bleeding gums, but it has no apparent symptoms in some instances.

Periodontal disease commonly starts when the bacteria living in plaque causes an infection in the teeth' surrounding tissues, causing them to become irritated and inflamed. Ultimately, this infection will; cause the jawbone to withdraw and the tooth to become unattached.

When You Need Periodontal Treatment

There are several reasons why periodontal treatment may be necessary:

  • Moderate/advanced gum disease - Happens when the gums are bleeding, inflamed, or red around most teeth and the jawbone has started to recede.
  • Localized gum recession The infection that creates moderate or advanced gum disease often starts in one area. Gum recession may also be caused by over brushing with a hard bristle brush or a tooth not positioned accurately. Prompt treatment is necessary to prevent additional spreading.
  • Before crown lengthening – The periodontist may lengthen the tooth's crown by removing the tooth's soft tissue to provide more tooth exposure.
  • Ridge augmentation – This procedure, often termed "recontouring," may be needed to fix an uneven gum line. Before beginning treatment, a periodontist needs to treat all bacterial infections and periodontitis.

In mild/moderate periodontal problems, the periodontist's focus will be on curing the underlying bacterial infection and then providing advice on the most appropriate home cleaning methods. Sometimes a deep scaling is required to eliminate the bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and tissues. When periodontal disease is advanced, and the jawbone has regressed significantly, more concentrated cleaning may be needed, and loose teeth that cannot be preserved will be removed.

A periodontist is trained in dental implant procedures and can renew functionality to the mouth when teeth have been affected by periodontitis.

  • Because periodontal disease is progressive, removing the bacteria and calculus build up to halt the infection's spread is essential. Your dentist will be glad to inform you of the effective cleaning techniques and treatment options.
